FAQ

I want to compete, can I?

Yes. We have a competition team and we will help you focus on nogi competitions. We have had great success in competitions and we are only getting better.

How much does it cost for classes?

Beware of schools that are not up front with you about their prices or want to lock you into very long contracts. Our prices are $55/month all access or just $35/month for 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu only. Our drop ins are $10 per class. Come in and try a free class to see what we are about!

Can I join at anytime?

Yes. Beginners can start at anytime. If you'd like to check out a class, please drop us a line and speak with RW Pegau or Jacob Powers.

What should I wear to class?

If you are new, come to your first class with track pants or shorts, and a tee shirt that you don't mind getting stretched (or ripped). Proper hygiene is required, you must be clean and odour free, and nails are to be cut short.

What kind of shape do I have to be in? Minimum Physical requirements.

Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport/art. Any major injuries, chronic conditions, heart problems or such will prevent you from participating from class. This is to ensure that you won't do something to aggravate the existing problem. Please let the instructors know of any injuries or medical conditions that you might have before class so we can assess you particular situation. As a general rule, if you have trouble getting to your feet from a seated position or doing about 20 push ups as a minimum ...jujitsu might not be for you.

Do you accept anyone?

No. We have a great gym and want to keep it that way. We don't want the uber meat head type atmosphere that people are intimidated by. We will not train someone to become a better bully, street fighter or criminal. Those persons who are mentally unstable or pose a risk to the existing student base will be barred from joining. Don't waste our time, your time, and the time of your fellow students in this endeavor. We are not looking to add every single person who walks through the door either. Quality is better that quantity and our training method makes that very clear.
**We reserve the right to refuse clients or participants

How do I get started?

Give us a call (509-999-4877 or 509-230-2406) or drop us an email. We are more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Come on by and observe a class or jump on the mat with us. After that, if everything works out, become part of the team!

What is your teaching style like?

Repetition makes mastery. We want you to see the move and do the move again and again. We generally do a series for 2 weeks so that you have multiple attempts to get the move into your system. We want you to be able to take something away from every class and will make every effort for you to do so.

What is the gym atmosphere like?

We are very proud of the student base and atmosphere we have created at the dojo. Our retention rate is high because our students take pride in their activities. We have some of the most sincere individuals you will ever meet. Instructors attract like minded people. The students are a reflection of the instructor and their surrounding environment. A key guide when checking out martial art classes is see how the students treat one another. We great each other as we come in. People know about each other and care about one another outside of the gym as well as inside it.

What do you expect from students?

We expect the student to show up on time or a little early to every class. For the student to show up in good spirit and ready to workout to the maximum of theier ability. We understand that sometimes things are not perfect for your body or mind every day. We expect you to be adult enough to use good judgement on whether you are right to be working out that day.

I am looking for a good workout. Is it?

BIG TIME! Our classes can be intensive workouts. If you like getting the heart pumping and the adrenaline going, then come check us out!

Are the classes 'rough'?

This isn't ballet so expect a physical workout. Bumps and bruises do occur from time to time.

Are there belts in Jiu Jitsu?

Yes. The 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system uses shirts: white, blue, purple, brown and black. For kids: White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black.
Further, we stripe inbetween belts to show achievement and help with goal setting. There are 4 stripes between each belt.

How long before I get my first belt?

That depends really. The 10th Planet system is tough and promotion is peer based. What that means is that you don't get points for kata. "Wax on, wax off" does not fly. You have to been able to demonstrate the techniques and be able to do them to the unwilling oppoenent in sparring or compeitition. However, in general you should be able to get a Blue belt in 1-2 years depending on ability and dedication.

Does one have to be strong or big?

Nope. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu uses human bio-mechanics, physics, and proper positioning to achieve it's objective.

Do you have to be a black belt in order to do the moves effectively?

I once heard a quote from a BJJ black belt that has really stuck with me. "A black belt cover exactly 2 inches of your ass. It is up to you to cover the rest." . It is a piece of cloth that shows dedication to an art. There are many people out there without a days training that are fantastic fighters and many black belts who are not. We teach techniques that can be used within a very short period of study because of the level of repetition and dedication to instruction that we offer. On average you should expect 1-2 months of trial and error before the concepts themselves start to make sense. Don't get discouraged. When you finally have that epipohany, it makes everything worth it!
